Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning, Satan shudders and says... 'Oh shit....she's awake!!'

""Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!""

European Adventure: Day 6 - Pessa- Leognan & Sauternes

Day 1 of the Wine Adventure takes us to the Pessac-Leognan & Sauternes region of Bordeaux.

Chateau Olivier

One of the cool things about Chateau Olivier is that it has a mote and drawbridge. As you will see from the photos, there is a lot of renovation going on.

One of the more fascinating things that I saw on the trip was the variation in tanks used in the wine making process. So you will see quite a few related pictures.

And we tasted some delicious wines. We tasted 3 Grand Cru Classe wines. 2019 Chateau Olivier White is 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillion. 2019 Chateau Olivier Red is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot; while the 2016 Chateau Olivier Red is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot;

Chateau Sigalas Rabaud

One other theme you will see with the wineries is women in wine. We were able to meet several. Chateau Sigalas Rabaud is a Premier Grand Cru Classe winery.  In 2016, Sigalas obtained the highest level of “High Environmental Value” certification.

La Demoiseele de Sigalas (The Maid of Sigalas) is a dry white wine blend of 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc. Chateau Sigalas Rabaud Sauternes 2009 is a blend of 85% Semillon and 15% Sauvignon Blanc. The Liutenant of Sigalas 2016 is 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc. Inspite of the slight variations in blends these wines were very different. The real surprise winner was the La Semillante which is 100% Semillon. There might be some of that slowly making its way to the States.

Chateau d'Yquem

Chateau d'Yquem was the only conglomerate owned winery that we visited. As you will see from the number of photos that this is a spectacular winery. I just couldn't get very excited about the wine...especially for the price. Chateau d'Yquem does have this really cool way of depicting the color of their wine (see photo below) and was pretty spot on for the 1990 Chateau d'Yquem that was previously in my cellar.
